Scholarship Fund

 

2010 Eligibility Criteria

  1. West Hartford Firefighters Scholarship Fund program provides undergraduate scholarships for the children, step-children, grandchildren and descendents of a current, retired or deceased WHFD Firefighter in good standing with Local 1241.  Scholarship may be used for attendance at accredited colleges, universities or approved vocational schools.
  2. Applicant must be a graduating high school senior or have graduated from high school during the calendar year in which the scholarship is awarded.
  3. Applicant must be accepted by an institution of higher education.  Applicant must plan to enroll as a full time student (as defined by the college or university) in the coming academic year.
  4. Applicant must submit a complete Scholarship Application.
  5. Applicants will be considered on the basis of scholastic performance, leadership, financial need and the essay.

Selection Process

  1. Selection Committee will be comprised of a spouses or domestic partners of a current, retired or deceased West Hartford Firefighter.
  2. The number of scholarships will be determined based on annual contributions and investment returns.  At least one $2,000 scholarship will be awarded annually for the first 5 years. 
  3. All applications shall be mailed or delivered to the “Children and Grandchildren of West Hartford Fire Fighters Scholarship Fund” and post marked on or prior to January 31, 2010.  The Scholarship Committee will not consider late or incomplete applications.
  4. After screening to ensure that applicants meet eligibility requirements Committee Chairperson will assign each applicant a number.  Application packages will be distributed to the Selection Committee with numbers.  All names will be removed from the applications.
  5. All legitimate applications will be reviewed by an impartial Selection Committee.  The Selection Committee will review applications using the assigned applicant numbers as opposed to the applicants’ names.
  6. Selection Committee will submit to the Scholarship Committee Chairperson their selection for the scholarship and an alternate (1st & 2nd choice).   The student receiving the most selections will be awarded the scholarship.
  7. The Scholarship will be awarded at the West Hartford Firefighters annual Retirement Dinner.  

 

Use of Scholarship Funds

  1. Recipient must use scholarship funds for tuition, fees or books. 

 

Award Notification

  1. The Scholarship Awardee will be notified in writing.  Scholarship Awardee must sign a letter of intent to accept / reject their scholarship.  If any Scholarship recipient declines the Scholarship, the Committee will select the next alternate.
